Do other people mumble a lot?
A common complaint from those experiencing hearing loss is the perception that people mumble. When people first acquire a hearing loss, they typically miss high frequency sounds more often than low frequency sounds. That is speech sounds such as “s,” “th,” and “f.” Any reduction in hearing in these pitch regions, makes it difficult to hear clearly giving the impression that others are mumbling.
Are your family and friends telling you they must keep repeating themselves before you can hear them properly?
Constantly asking people to repeat themselves can be frustrating for everyone involved. Nodding or laughing in the hope of giving a suitable response can be embarrassing if you misunderstand, and straining to hear all the time can be exhausting.
Is the TV louder than it used to be?
Hearing loss often develops gradually, and because we adjust to it slowly, it can be hard to notice. Usually, someone else will point it out. If you’re concerned that your TV might be too loud, ask a friend or family member if the volume is comfortable for them.
Ringing or buzzing noises in your ears?
Noises in the ears, known as tinnitus, affects many people. It is a symptom often associated with hearing loss. While there is no cure for tinnitus, it can be managed. Hearing aids are an excellent choice when hearing loss is also present.
Struggling to hear in group conversations?
It’s true that hearing in the presence of background noise is challenging, even for those with perfect hearing. However, if you often struggle to hear when having coffee with friends in a cafe or a drink at the local pub, you may have a degree of hearing loss.

Why have your hearing tested?
Hearing loss affects over 40% of over 50s and 71% of those over 70 in the UK (Source RNID). In total it affects 18 million adults in the UK (Akeroyd MA and Munro KJ (2024). Despite this, many people are unaware that their hearing has suffered, with onset of hearing loss often slow and changes in hearing difficult to perceive until the symptoms are more severe.
