Ear Wax Removal

Safe, Comfortable Ear Wax Removal in Mid & West Wales

Blocked ears caused by wax build-up are very common and can affect hearing, balance, and comfort. At Hear, we provide professional, gentle ear wax removal using modern, evidence-based techniques in a calm and friendly environment.

As a family-run clinic, we take the time to ensure you feel informed, comfortable, and confident at every step.

Do I Need to Prepare My Ears Before My Appointment?

Yes — preparing your ears properly helps make wax removal safer, quicker, and more comfortable.

We recommend using olive oil spray or drops once or twice daily for 3–5 days before your appointment, unless advised otherwise by a healthcare professional.

If your ears are painful, leaking, or you suspect an infection, please inform us before your appointment.

What Happens During Your Appointment?

1. Ear Health History

We begin by discussing:

  • Your ear and hearing history
  • Any previous ear problems or surgery
  • Symptoms such as pain, dizziness, tinnitus, or discharge
  • Any medical conditions that may affect treatment

This helps us determine the safest and most appropriate method for you.

2. Video Otoscopy

We use video otoscopy to look inside your ear canal using a small camera.

This allows us to:

  • Clearly see the wax build-up
  • Check the health of your ear canal and eardrum
  • Show you the image on screen (if you wish)
  • Decide which removal method is most suitable

This visual check is an important safety step and helps patients feel reassured.

3. Ear Wax Removal

Our two primary professional wax removal techniques include the following, and are selected based on your ear health, wax type, and personal comfort.

1. Microsuction:

Our most commonly used method.

Microsuction is a safe, precise, and gentle technique that uses a small medical suction device to remove wax under direct visual guidance.

Benefits of Microsuction:

  • Quick and effective
  • No water involved
  • Suitable for most patients
  • Ideal for those with previous ear problems
  • Allows excellent control and visibility

Microsuction is widely regarded as the gold standard for ear wax removal.

2. Water Irrigation

Water irrigation uses a controlled flow of warm water to gently flush softened wax from the ear canal.

This method may be suitable if:

  • Wax has been adequately softened with oil
  • There is no history of ear surgery or perforation
  • Microsuction is not appropriate or preferred

We only use modern, regulated irrigation systems and carry this out following strict safety guidelines.

4. Aftercare Advice

Following wax removal, we will provide clear aftercare guidance, which may include:

  • Keeping ears dry for a short period
  • Avoiding cotton buds
  • Advice on ongoing ear care and wax management

If needed, we can also advise on long-term wax prevention strategies.

When should I seek ear wax removal and who can benefit?

If your ears feel blocked, itchy, or uncomfortable, or if you’re having trouble hearing, feeling full after exposure to water, have ringing in the ears, earache, or even wearing a hearing aid that’s not fully functioning, you might have a build-up of ear wax that needs professional removal.

Is ear wax removal painful?

Professional ear wax removal is generally pain-free, though some individuals may experience mild discomfort or pressure during the procedure. Qualified professionals are trained to minimise any discomfort and ensure a gentle and safe removal process.

How long does ear wax removal take?

The duration of the procedure varies based on the severity of the wax build-up and the techniques used. At Hear, we allocate up to 60 minutes to the appointment, however, it usually takes 15 – 30 minutes. Some cases may require multiple visits for more treatment. Follow-up appointments are free if more treatments are needed.

How often should I have professional ear wax removal?

The frequency depends on factors like individual ear wax production and underlying conditions. Some people may need removal every few months, while others might only require it annually. Consulting a qualified professional for personalised recommendations is best.

At Hear, we encourage our patients to come in for professional review throughout the year, as advised. This allows you the opportunity to get to know your ears and act before your hearing is impacted.

Can I prevent ear wax build-up?

While you can’t completely prevent ear wax production, you can take steps to minimise excessive build-up.

  • Avoid using cotton buds or other objects to clean your ears, as they can push wax deeper and create blockages.
  • Try to minimise exposure to dusty environments.
  • Be mindful of music plugs and cotton bud usage, as they can encourage wax buildup.
  • Warm environments can increase wax production.

If you are prone to excessive ear wax, using a pharmaceutical-grade lubricant can be a simple and effective method of managing wax buildup, aiding earwax removal, and helping to maintain healthy ears.

Please feel free to contact us for more information on suitable products.

Can I remove ear wax at home?

DIY methods for ear wax removal can be ineffective and potentially dangerous, risking injury or infection. Cotton buds, for example, can push wax deeper and damage the eardrum. Ear candles can cause burns and are not scientifically proven to be effective. It’s best to leave ear wax removal to professionals who have the knowledge, experience, and specialised tools to safely and effectively remove excess wax.

Does the NHS offer ear wax removal?

Since 2018, most NHS GP practices stopped routinely providing ear wax removal. In Ceredigion, there are now only two NHS clinics providing wax removal – Aberaeron and Carmarthen.

At Hear, we understand how alarming it can feel when your hearing suddenly gets worse due to excess earwax. We are committed to offering quick appointments, often same-day, to support you and your ear health.

How much does ear wax removal cost?

At Hear, ear wax removal is £50 for one ear and £70 for both ears. Follow-up appointments are free of charge for return visits if we are unable to remove all wax in the first visit.
